Waterproof Music: Is it a good or bad idea in the swimming pool?

December 21st, 2009

H2O Audio Michael PhelpsOutside of the thrill of competition, swimming lap after lap in a pool can become a bit monotonous to say the very least. Staring at that blue line an the pool’s tiled floor, or gazing upward at the ceiling can lose its appeal after the first five or ten minutes. Unlike other cardio activities, such as running where the outside environment is ever changing or pedalling on a bike across a steep mountainous trail, swimming lacks distractions that can make the time pass quicker.

In answer to that there has been headway in supplying those with an aquatic affinity a means to mix things up, keep themselves motivated to swim longer than it takes for the boredom factor to take over, and also pump you up at the same time. The remedy is waterproof music players, with will allow you to stroke away to your heart’s delight to the sweet tunes of your favourite music.

Music is not only a wonderful distraction and also a way to get you into the zone or more in tune with yourself and your body, but it is also a proven source of motivation. Clinical studies have shown that when working out to the pulsing beat of an up tempo song exercisers have been able to go longer and more intensely in their workout bouts. What this means is that your swimming strength, endurance, and overall fitness could benefit as well!

These studies found that especially in moments when one’s focus could wane or fatigue starts to set in, music was able to help one block out the pain and they continued onward. Outside of improving your performance, listening to music while in the pool is nothing short than a brilliant way to tick off those minutes and make your time all that more enjoyable.

Yet critics aren’t too keen on the idea as they say that swimmers tuned into their MP3 players and headphones aren’t going to be able to be as aware of their surroundings. The music may block out the sound of a lifeguard’s whistle and could potentially become a safety hazard.

They do have a point, but one could argue that there is a sound dial for a reason. Is it not possible to still have the music playing in the background but not have it up so loud that you are blocked out from any outside noises?

Secondly, if you plan on doing the majority of your swimming in a lane and are away from the path of others you shouldn’t pose a threat to any other swimmers in the pool. It seems that the benefits of swimming with music, beating the boredom factor and improving your fitness, outweigh the potential pitfalls. This is because you can combat those by listening at a reasonable level and just remaining conscious of the area around you.

Do swimmers need supplements?

December 13th, 2009

SupplementsYou might have seen the myriad articles about Michael Phelps’ ‘unique’ dietary habits – reports range from 10 egg omlettes to French toast with powdered sugar – but one thing which crops up again and again is his use of sports supplements.

Of course, it’s understandable that an Olympic Champion training six hours or more each day needs to look outside normal food & drink for his required 10,000 calories, but does this mean that you need to include sports supplements in your own dietary routine?

We spoke to Anthony Peters, in-house nutrition expert at Sci-MX Nutrition to find out.

“Endurance athletes, who may be concerned with minimising weight, sometimes associate nutritional supplements with getting as big and muscular as possible and this tends to put them off. But, in fact, most of our products are primarily focused on helping the body recover and, with the right training, weight gain is not a concern. When you consider that boxers, who are obsessed with weight, use supplements extensively then it starts to make sense. A lot of our customers are serious swimmers and triathletes.

He added,

“Principally, endurance athletes tend to focus on fuel products, high-carb drinks taken before and during training to keep blood sugar topped up, and they often ignore post workout supplements for recovery. However, we tend to find that the more serious the athlete, the more attention they give to supplementation after training has finished.

If you consider protein supplements for example, yes they can be used for muscle gain, but their core function is really to provide sufficient resources for your body to repair itself so they are perfect as a recovery aid. We manufacture a gradual release protein, GRS-5 System, which is great just before bed to keep your body topped up and allow it to rebuild while you sleep”.

Of course, the opinion of a sports nutrition company was always like to favour the use of supplements, but are there any proven benefits? Well, yes.

Swimming creates dynamic resistance, that is to say that the level of resistance varies according to how much force the swimmer exerts, which means that a swimmer can derive great benefit from increasing their explosive power. Creatine to deliver benefits in explosive power and including a creatine supplement could have a considerable impact in short distance swimming.

But, if you swim further and at a more sedate pace, to keep in shape for example, you should keep in mind that all supplements, fuel, protein, and even creatine, have a calorific value and if you are simply adding them to your program without proper consideration, the results might not be as you expect.  Consider talking to a personal trainer or a swim instructor with experience at an elite level to get an idea of whether sports supplements are right for you.

Olympic Swimming

December 4th, 2009

Olympic SwimmingWith the recent announcement of London coming out on top for the hosting of the 2012 Summer Olympics, already preparations are being staged for this grand honour. For athletes however, the meticulous planning, rigorous training, and childhood dreams have been put in place years before 2012 may have entered the thoughts of many. Yet, that does not mean, that with the impending summer games, and notably the Olympic swimming events, the hopes, aspirations, and competitions riding on them has captured the intrigue of swimming fans as well as regular men and women around the world.

As the athletes take to the pool, outfitted in their chic speedo swimwear, and prepare for the races of their lives, both youth and adult swimming programs have raised in popularity, and speedo swimwear has been there every stroke of the way. A cornerstone of every modern Olympic competition, swimming is not only one of the most watched and followed of the summer games’ sports, but also perhaps one that is most likely to win the hearts of enthusiastic fans. With such a wide array of events and distances, spanning anywhere from 50 meters to 10 kilometres, in a variety of different styles, it is no small wonder that while those participants glide through the water in their speedo swimwear, viewers can’t help but be enraptured.

Olympic SwmmingIn fact, despite being from different countries, backgrounds, and varying experiences, fans and swimmers alike can come together and be pulled into the purity of the competition. Untainted by biases, or partial judges, in swimming races there are clear winners. The sport inspires hope and demands the respect of not only the contestants but any who witness. As speedo swimwear works to stay at the forefront of aquatic technology, in doing so it is no coincidence that in the later decades performance times have drastically improved. With the developments that speedo swimwear has been able to add to its swimwear lines, water resistance has been reduced and times have dropped.

Yet, one needn’t be of Olympic caliber to appreciate the improvements of speedo swimwear. Youth programs filled with burgeoning young stars can delight in faster times of their own. Adults, whether just getting into the sport or as veterans, can feel confident that with the speedo swimwear they wear they can enjoy their beloved activity touting only the best of apparel and gear.

As the London Olympic games draw nearer, the eyes of not only the athletes that have waited so long to compete there look, but the aspirations and aims of the next generation do to. For it is the next generation that is inspired to take a dive into their local swimming pool in their new speedo suit, the elderly grandmother moved to take up a water aerobics class to improve her health, the swimming team off to their next meet with the hopes of victory that too follow the gaze of the Olympic athletes.

It is for those Olympic participants, and the billions of others around the globe that speedo swimwear strives to adhere to the very highest of standards. For when one’s hopes, dreams, and desires lay in the pool, speedo swimwear wants to do its part in obtaining those goals.
