Fin Advice

What Are Fins?

Fins are a training aid worn on the feet that can come in hundreds of different styles, shapes and sizes.

Why Use Fins?

Fins are a training aid designed to improve your lower body strength, improve ankle flexibility and allow you to train faster. There are many benefits to using fins and styles/lengths to suit everyone’s needs.

Fin Lengthsshort-fin-200

Fins can come in all different lengths, each length of fin has a different purpose:

  • Short fins – the best suited to training. These fins feel more natural to swim with and so allow your natural kick to be worked (rather than changing your stroke totally!)
  • Long Fins/Split Fins – these scuba style fins aren’t great for swimming training so are best avoided. This length requires slow movements and so aren’t beneficial to swimming training or elite swimmers. They are perfect for scuba/snorkel use and are also very good if you are just using you fins for ankle flexibility.
  • mono-200Monofin – a one-blade fin that joins the feet together, like a mermaid tail! These fins are great for tough workouts where you are trying to seriously improve your lower body strength or also for developing your butterfly technique.

Benefits of Using Fins

So we know that fins are great for use in developing your lower body strength but they also have a number of other benefits for swimmers.

Ankle flexibility is a real benefit of swimming with fins as the fins put extra force on your ankles. By improving the flexibility in your ankle your butterfly leg kick will be much more efficient and so can improve all strokes distance of the wall.

Fins allow you to maintain a better body position easily so you can focus on other areas of your technique that need improvement, whether this be body rotation, arm technique or breathing pattern.

Using fins makes your training much more time efficient as you will fatigue quicker and so not be able to train for as long – great if you still want to train hard but are under time pressure.

Top Tips for using Fins

  • Work the distance off the wall when turning. You will really feel the difference that your fins are making and over time see those improvements in your races – at the end of the day that’s what competitive swimmers train for. Don’t forget in a race you can swim up to 15 metres under water off the wall or from the start so fins are great for working that.
  • Fins are not suited for use when swimming breaststroke and are to work the lower body muscle groups only – WRONG! You can swim breaststroke with butterfly legs which really works your arms and helps to develop your technique.
  • Avoid diving whilst using fins. When you dive off the side of the pool or block your toes and feet can grip the surface, with fins you can’t get that grip so you’re at risk of slipping and injuring yourself.
  • When using a kickboard and working your front crawl kick, why not bring out your fins?! Your fins will work those legs and give you a great lower body work out!

Product Reviews : Training Aids

I’ve been using the same training aids for quite a few years in the swimming pool. I’ve been comfortable and used to using the same equipment over and over again but recently got the opportunity to try out the Maru Training Fin and Head Contour Paddles.

Maru Training Fin

Maru Training Fin

The first thing you notice about the Maru Training Fin is obviously its bright, fun design. These are a real eye catcher on poolside and quite far from what I would have personally chosen just based on looks! But as soon as I put these fins on my feet I was shocked to find how much more comfortable they were than an older model fin! These fins are made with silicone so flexible, comfortable and soft on my feet. After a few lengths of swimming, these fins were sold! They had such a natural feel when swimming and allowed my natural kick to happen whilst giving me that extra speed and working my lower body. On the bottom wear small details that prevented me from slipping over when I stood up so was a handy extra that I would never have even thought of.

The Head Contour Paddle was also quite different to what I would have originally gone for. I used to wear hand paddles that were more of a finger paddle and were much smaller than this Contour Paddle. I was always weary that a larger paddle may have caused too much resistance for me or been uncomfortable strapped around my wrist. Again I’ve been proved so wrong! The paddles gave me the perfect amount of resistance in the water, so I could feel my pull and feel the power that I was getting from each arm pull. The strap around the wrist allows full wrist

movement in the water and is made of a rubbery material so is stretchy and comfortable at all times.

So would I recommend these to other swimmers? My answer is 100% yes.

I would also recommend to those like me, who stick with their old faithfuls because they are used to them, to be a little braver when choosing their new swim equipment! I was surprised in a good way and will never be afraid to try something a little different again.

Your Guide to Speedo Goggles

Our range of Speedo goggles is pretty wide, so when you are looking for a new set which models should you be considering?

Training Goggles and Racing Goggles Explained :

There are essentially two types of goggle; racing and non-racing (i.e. training).

The racing ones like the Speedo Speedsocket are not especially comfortable for long periods but offer minimal drag. Racing goggles, by design, are for performance rather than comfort. If you want a pair for training and keeping on for more than a couple of minutes, consider models which are designed for training and not racing (i.e. anything other than racing versions).

Which Speedo Goggles Are Best For Me?

Speedo offer their goggles in multiple sizing – multisex which are general suitable for adults, ladies specific, which as the title suggests are for ladies and then children’s sizes. Use the compare feature (last column) to show the goggles for your child’s age band – see last paragraph for details.

There also differing lenses to choose from. Mirrored and smoked are ideal for outdoor and bright conditions. Clear for normal indoor pool swimming.

Emma’s Swimming Kit Bag

Hi, my name’s Emma and I’ve been involved in swimming for about 15 years. I was a swimmer from the word go and started swimming competitively at about 8 years old – I have been hooked since then! A few years ago I started coaching swimming and am a qualified teacher and teach every week with some amazing kids. Now I work here at Simply Swim and wanted to share with you my favourite swimming equipment and what my essentials are in my swimming kit bag!

The obvious pieces are the swimming costume, hat and goggles.

Speedo Endurance Plus Sprintrate Leaderback

Speedo Endurance Plus Sprintrate Leaderback

My favourite swimming costume at the moment is the Speedo Endurance Plus Sprintrate Leaderback as it’s bright in the phantom purple colour and is 100% chlorine resistant (so will last about 20 times longer than a traditional fabric in the pool!). For guys, I doubt you’d have the swimming costume in there but there are a fantastic selection of jammers and trunks to choose from.
I always have a silicone cap (or two!)  in my kit bag as they are so comfortable to wear and are really long lasting. I couldn’t pick a favourite as there are so many colours and patterns to choose from at Simply Swim!

My favourite swimming goggles for racing are the Speedo Speedsocket Mirror Goggles as I like being able to get in the zone before a big race, no one can see your eyes and the double head strap keeps them in place for the dive. For training I use the Speedo Futura BioFUSE . They are so comfortable to wear for a hours in the pool and have an anti-fog lens too so you have clear vision underwater with no annoying fog!

Zoggs Silicone Blue-Finz

Zoggs Silicone Blue-Finz

My training essentials that I always carry are my fins, hand paddles and a pull buoy. I really like using the Zoggs Silicone Blue-Finz whilst training as they are really comfortable and fit really well. They are light in my bag so don’t make my bag really heavy with everything else!

When working my upper body I put my Speedo BioFUSE Finger Paddle on. They give really good resistance whilst I swim but the shape makes them surprisingly comfortable and give me a great grip on the water.
The Head Pullbuoy is one of my favourites to use as the foam doesn’t soak up the water and it’s lightweight in my bag.

I always have a water bottle handy for when I’m training. You under-estimate how much exercise you do whilst swimming so I use the Maru Drink Bottle . It’s red colour matches my bag and I can see how much drink I have left and when I need to go and refill.

When getting out the pool the first thing I grab is my towel. I use the Zoggs Koolan Towel at the moment as it’s really soft against the skin and dries quickly after I have used it.

Of course one important part of the swimming equipment is the bag! You need something to hold all your important swimming equipment in! My bag of choice is the TYR Alliance Team Duffel II . It is easy to spot on poolside amongst the hundreds of other swim bags as it has a bright red colour and is big enough to hold all my swimming kit in.

Feel Confident In A Skirtini

SkirtiniA lot of us struggle with getting into shape for the summer. An NHS survey has shown that 66% of women dislike their stomach and nearly a quarter of women are not confident about their thighs. 74% of people asked admitted they miss out on water activities because they have no confidence in their swimsuit body.

What better way is there to feel more confident about yourself than doing a bit of swimming in your local pool? Swimming is great exercise to get your body into shape as it tones all over and being a continuous exercise is one of the best ways for calorie burning.

But still have the issue about getting your body out and into a swimming costume? Do not panic, there is a solution to this!

The skirtini (a swimming costume with a skirt) helps to cover up your stomach and thighs whilst coming in gorgeous designs that will look amazing! Swimwear with skirts ensure you have no need to worry about showing your body as they discretely skim over your stomach and tops of your thighs. Check out the Speedo Waveboom and Zoggs Altona which are our favourite’s and look out for swimming skirts in the future, they are sure to be around for seasons to come!

Product Review : Zoggs Zoggy Swimfree

SwimfreeThis season sees the introduction of the Zoggy Swimfree suits. They are available in both a boys design; The Zoggy Swimfree suit or girl’s design; The Miss Zoggy Swimfree suit. Designed as a water confidence aid it offers all round buoyancy. The first thing to notice is that your child is zipped into the suit and is therefore completely secured with no risk of slipping out which is always a concern with rings and other similar swimming aids. The material has high SPF rating to protect your child’s skin from the sun (I am pretty sure when I was a younger my mum just made me wear a t-shirt – no SPF ratings in those days!). The idea is very simple and effective; zip your child into what is essentially a sun protection suit and you can then inflate bladders that are sewn into the suit, front and back. Having two separate bladders it allows you to adjust the amount of air in the bladders to trim the buoyancy.

Last summer we had the chance to try a pre-production model with my just 3 year old son whilst on holiday. He loved the suit, never once complaining of the fit (he can be very vocal when something is not comfortable!). As a non swimmer, initially he was a little hesitant but within 5 minutes he was getting into the pool, floating around and playing with his older brother.  He loved the swimfree suit and for the rest of the week as soon as we arrived at the pool, he put on the suit and jumped into the pool without waiting for reassurance from me.

Of course carers should still closely supervise children using the swimfree suit as it is only a confidence aid and not a life jacket.

It definitely increased our sons confidence in the pool and allowed him to feel independent not having to cling to me all the time. I would say that he enjoyed that holiday all the more for the freedom the Swimfree gave him. For me, a definite buy. See how the Zoggy Swimfree can benefit your child below:

Speedo Launch New Triathlon Wetsuit

Swimwear brand Speedo have followed up last year’s launch of their high performance triathlon range with a series of new products for 2011.

The new products include a range of top-spec TRIATHLETE wetsuits, which feature seamless bonded surfaces and flexible underarm panels for improved manoeuvrability and comfort.

The range also includes a series of new TRIATHELE Trisuits – 12 full body tri-suits and a two-piece range comprising two distinct collections, which have been designed to deliver results.

Geri Halliwell to launch swimwear

Geri Halliwell of Spice Girls fame is looking to again broaden her horizons – this time by creating her own swimwear range for Next.

The singing star has also said that she will be modelling for the swimwear campaign along with giving it her name.

8387292The 38-year-old will be launching the swimwear collection later in 2011, and has confirmed her collaboration with Next for the range.

She said about Next: “I used to work there years ago. So the range is a dream come true. I never thought all those years ago that I’d one day be designing for Next.

“I’ve worked hard on it, too. I’m not just lending my name. I’ve gone out, sourced all the fabrics, made the designs with a team and I’m modelling in the campaign too.

“The range is great. I want it to be affordable and, having worn it all myself, I know it’s a good product and I’m proud of it.”

Speedo Launches Underwater Camera

The world’s largest-selling swimwear brand has continued its divergence away from simply producing apparel with the development of a waterproof camera.

Speedo has unveiled the Aquashot camera, which will allow users to take pictures of the family splashing in the waves at the beach.

The waterproof gadget can be submerged up to three metres and is shock resistant up to one metre.

The technology is not the first underwater technology offering from Speedo. Earlier this year the company brought out the Aquabeat Waterproof MP3 player, to allow swimmers to catch up with the latest Lady Gaga or Killers tracks while completing a few laps of the local pool.

A unique feature of the latest camera is that it can float.

The camera has a 2.4″ LCD screen, an SD slot, a 5 megapixel sensor with 4X digital zoom and VGA quality video recording at 30fps.

There are colour schemes for him or her, with models available in pink and green.

The Aquashot camera is available for about £120.
